    Book details

A fascinating collection of photographs of Chelsea Football Club dating from its early days in 1905 until 1992, painstakingly selected from the Daily Mirror's extensive archive of tens of thousands of images. These photos tell the story of one of Britain's most glamorous and often-controversial football clubs - from Sir Matt Busby's three guest appearances during WWII, to regular matchday visits from Steve McQueen and Raquel Welch during Tommy Docherty's reign in the swinging '60s. There's magnificent photography of star players such as Ron 'Chopper' Harris, the 1971 UEFA Cup Winners Cup side, and David Speedie and Kerry Dixon - the heroes of the '80s revival. If blue is the colour, you'll find it in here.

Andy Sherwood is Deputy Editor of the original men's magazine, Loaded. A journalist for 15 years, he previously worked on Shoot, the football magazine, as Features Editor, where he interviewed many of the biggest names in the game, including Chelsea stars Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and former players such as Chris Sutton. He's also worked for Smash Hits, Q and FHM and is Editor-At-Large of The Sno, a ski magazine for seasonaires in France.

I wish I'd read the reviews on here before buying, though I had a quick flip through the book in a shop befroe buying online. I was well aware that the book only covered a certain period of Chelsea's history and that was actually part of the attraction. However when I opened the book I did think the first big colour picture looked wrong, surely the old North Stand was in the wrong place? No, they've printed the photo back to front! In a book that is largely picture based this is unforgivable, but luckily the rest of the pictures seem to be the right way round, though I'm not sure all the captions are correct. When did John Hollins ever play against Ricky Villa for Chelsea and when did we wear that kit?Slightly odd choice of Chelsea legends written about too, Durie! And don't get me started on the writing itself as I know I could have done better at least in checking my facts. So Ossie made his debut against Wokingham in the League Cup!! Words fail me.Only get this if youv'e had a look first and like the selection of pictures.

As a Chelsea fan of nearly 50 years I was recently given this book as a birthday present and found it generally quite a good publication. I enjoyed the many photos which bring back memories. Ok some of the text has some bad mistakes but amongst all the many Chelsea books in my collection I can't recall one without some sort of error in it. Also some of the other reviews seem to totally miss the point of the book. One of them states "history seems to stop at 1991". The title, "When Football Was Football" is a clue to the content ! And a look inside the front cover finds an explanation that it is all about Chelsea history BEFORE the Premier League existed. Got it now ? I think it compares favourably with other efforts and would recommend it to younger fans many of who are under the impression the game began in 1992

When Football Was Football: Chelsea: A Nostalgic Look at a Century of the ClubThis book was bought for me as a birthday present. It's awful, a slipshod collection of photos. Lazy journalism of the worst kind. Apparently history stopped in 1991, presumably because it was too expensive to reproduce any later photos.Avoid it completely.

It's a good idea for a book, and there are some nice photos in there, but not much else to appeal to football history fans - it feels a bit empty and doesn't have any depth to it. It is nostalgic, but it's far from comprehensive. If it was £8 cheaper then maybe it'd be a decent stocking-filler.

The description sounds like this would be an interesting historical photographic look of around 100 years of Chelsea Football Club - it isn't. Although published in 2010, surprisingly the pictures (and text) finish at 1991, thereby missing the most successful period of the club. Okay, this might therefore be good for the more recent supporter or follower of the team. Wrong again. I have not thoroughly read all the text, but even my cursory glance through this book I noticed a quite a few inaccuracies. But then again, this is not a text driven historical record of Chelsea, it's more a photo and picture book story? No, several of the pictures have been reversed (left has become right & right, left) and B&W pictures partially coloured or have graphics or newspaper cuttings superimposed over them.In summary, this is not much more that a glorified scrap album. Okay for a browse through but if you are looking for a serious record of "The Blues" or "The Bridge" you may well be disappointed.Don't buy this, instead buy Rick Glanvill's superb "Chelsea Football Club - The Official History in Pictures" for a similar price but is 10 times better in every respect.
